The exercise of the right to selfdetermination according to the princip les enshrined in the UN main documents was only achieved after a lengthy pr ocess that mobilized the East Timorese themselves, but also implied the par ticipation of many other actors across the globe – national governments, in ternational agencies, NGOs and the world public opinion in general – in con texts that\nmoved from the height of the Cold War to the demise of the bipo lar world.
